RAMALLAH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), An Israeli military court on Sunday extended the detention of Palestinian doctor Dima Amin, 55, for five additional days over social media posts, despite her suffering of an acute heart attack and undergoing cardiac catheterization while in custody.
Israeli occupation forces arrested Amin, a gynecologist, from her home in Ramallah in the central West Bank at dawn last Tuesday. Contact with her was then cut off for 36 hours, with neither her family nor her lawyer informed of where she was being held.
According to her testimony, Amin was subjected to abuse during her arrest after her hands were tightly bound. Israeli authorities refused to loosen the restraints despite her health condition, leading to a deterioration in her condition and an acute heart attack.
She was transferred to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, where she underwent cardiac catheterization, before Israeli authorities returned her to the Benjamin interrogation center immediately after her discharge, despite her need for medical follow-up and care.
Doctors Without Borders expressed deep concern over reports of the arrest of Dr. Dima Mohammed Amin, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, from her home in the West Bank, describing her as the latest victim of a systematic Israeli campaign to pursue and detain Palestinian medical workers.
Amin’s case comes amid Israel’s continued detention of Palestinians over social media posts and online content, a policy criticized by rights groups over the expanding prosecution and imprisonment of Palestinians for expressions and posts that Israeli authorities classify as “incitement.”
