Israel sentences Palestinian prisoner Abu Rmeileh to 42 months despite deteriorating health

JENIN, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), An Israeli occupation court at Salem military camp on Monday sentenced the 67-year-old Palestinian prisoner Ata Hassan Attiya Rmeilat, Abu Rmeileh, to 42 months in prison and imposed on him a fine of 5,000 shekels.

His son, Alaa Abu Rmeileh, said Israeli forces arrested his father on October 31, 2023, after storming his home in Jenin.

He said his father was assaulted during the arrest and has since been held under harsh detention conditions while facing repeated court hearings.

Alaa said the sentence was issued despite repeated warnings about his father’s deteriorating health. Abu Rmeileh suffers from heart problems and needs specialized medical intervention, including open-heart surgery.

The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs had warned in March 2025 of the seriousness of Abu Rmeileh’s health condition. It said his weight had dropped to less than 40 kilograms and that he was suffering from heart problems requiring urgent treatment and medical follow-up.

Abu Rmeileh is a well-known political and organizational figure in Jenin governorate. He serves as secretary of Fatah’s Jenin branch and has maintained a prominent political and community presence in the governorate for many years.

The sentence comes amid Israel’s continued tightening of detention conditions for Palestinian prisoners, as Palestinian and international calls grow for guaranteeing their basic rights and providing necessary medical care to sick detainees, especially those requiring urgent treatment.
