Medical neglect reported against Palestinian doctor held in Ofer jail

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Dr. Mazen Rantisi, a physician detained in Ofer prison, testified to lawyer Saja Mashareqa about his exposure to severe maltreatment and deliberate medical neglect, according to the Asra Media Office (AMO).

In a statement on Sunday, AMO said that Rantisi reported being denied access to his medication in Ofer jail, with jailers refusing to let him see a doctor and limiting care to a cursory pulse check through the cell door.

According to AMO, Rantisi has suffered noticeable weight loss in Ofer jail due to inadequate and inedible food served to detainees and his exposure to daily punitive practices.

Dr. Rantisi said Israeli soldiers force him to walk bent over and handcuffed while being verbally attacked whenever he leaves his cell, adding that guards compel prisoners to kneel four times daily during headcounts and inspections.

He also reported severe overcrowding in the cells, with 10 detainees crammed in a space designed for six beds, adding that Israeli forces repeatedly raid the cells, assaulting prisoners and firing tear gas canisters.

He noted that the cells are plagued by insects and mold, with no cleaning items provided, while prisoners are denied the chance to change clothes from the moment of arrest and are prevented from having books or writing tools.
