Palestinian Prisoner Yasmin Shaaban Freed After 18 Months in Israeli Jails

WEST BANK, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Israeli occupation authorities released Palestinian prisoner Yasmin Taysir Shaaban on Monday after she spent nearly 18 months in Israeli prisons, ending her latest period of detention amid the continued imprisonment of dozens of Palestinian women.

Shaaban, from al-Jalama village northeast of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, has been arrested repeatedly by Israeli forces over the past several years.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs said the number of Palestinian women held in Israeli prisons has risen to 88, with 24% held under administrative detention orders, including newly issued orders and renewals of existing ones.

Repeated arrests and years in Israeli prisons

Israeli forces rearrested Shaaban at dawn on May 18, 2025, after raiding and searching her home in al-Jalama, just months after her release under a prisoner exchange agreement in January of that year.

Shaaban had previously been arrested on March 1, 2022, and sentenced to six years in prison, along with a fine of 8,000 shekels.

According to Palestinian sources at the time, she was released as part of the November 2023 prisoner exchange.

She had also spent five years in Israeli prisons during an earlier period of detention that ended with her release in 2019.

Her latest release follows years of repeated arrests and imprisonment.

Administrative detention of Palestinian women continues

Shaaban’s release comes as Israeli authorities continue to use administrative detention against Palestinians, including women, without formal charges or trial.

Under this system, detention orders are based on evidence kept in secret files that detainees and their lawyers are generally unable to examine fully.

The orders can also be renewed repeatedly, allowing Palestinians to remain imprisoned for extended periods without being charged or tried.

According to the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, nearly one-quarter of the 88 Palestinian women currently held in Israeli prisons are subject to administrative detention orders.
