GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Palestinian teacher Diaa Abu al-Rous was killed on Saturday morning in an Israeli airstrike while traveling to his school in the Gaza Strip, prompting the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education to condemn the attack as a direct assault on educators and the right to education.
In a statement, Gaza’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education held Israeli occupation fully responsible for the killing of Abu al-Rous, who taught at the Malaysian School under the Central Gaza Education Directorate.
The ministry mourned the teacher, stressing that his killing while traveling to fulfill his educational duties provides further evidence that Palestinian teachers and students continue to face Israeli attacks, even on their way to school.
Education ministry condemns attacks on teachers and students
The ministry said the killing was not an isolated incident but part of a broader Israeli policy targeting the future of Palestinian generations.
It stressed that attacks on educators and students violate international laws and conventions protecting civilians and safeguarding the right to education.
The ministry called on the international community and United Nations institutions to take urgent action to stop attacks on Palestinian teachers and students and hold Israeli leaders accountable for crimes committed against Gaza’s education system.
International silence fuels impunity, the ministry warns
The ministry warned that international silence in the face of these violations encourages Israel to continue its attacks and reinforces a culture of impunity.
It emphasized that protecting the right to education begins with protecting the lives of teachers and students.
According to the ministry, targeting either group constitutes an attack on the other and undermines the future of the Palestinian people.
Gaza’s education system devastated by Israeli attacks
Abu al-Rous’s killing comes amid continuing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, which have caused extensive casualties among teachers, education personnel and students.
Israeli attacks have also destroyed or severely damaged schools, universities and other educational facilities, depriving hundreds of thousands of Palestinian students of their right to education.
The widespread destruction has inflicted severe damage on Gaza’s education system, leaving teachers and students struggling to continue learning amid displacement, insecurity and the loss of essential educational infrastructure.
