Palestinian youth shot dead by Israeli forces in Jenin military raid

A young Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli occupation gunfire during a military raid into the Jenin refugee camp, north of the occupied West Bank on Friday morning.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that 20-year-old Mateen Dabaya was shot and killed with an Israeli bullet to the head during an Israeli military raid into the Jenin refugee camp on Friday.

Local sources said the shooting took place shortly after Israeli special forces raided the camp, along with dozens of Israeli armored vehicles, at 8 am (05:00 GMT), during which armed confrontations broke out with Israeli occupation forces.

Videos circulated on social media showed Israeli forces shooting at ambulance crews.

At least five other Palestinians have been wounded with live ammunition on Friday morning in Jenin, according to the health ministry.

The West Bank city of Jenin has been the center of Israeli aggressions and military operations in the few past months, with about 47 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the start of this year in Jenin alone, including Al Jazeera’s veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The killing comes amid high tensions on the ground as Israeli forces and settlers have escalated their attacks and crackdown against Palestinians.

On Saturday, an Israeli occupation soldier was killed by a man in a drive-by shooting operation at the main checkpoint into the Shuafat refugee camp in occupied Jerusalem. Israeli occupation claimed the suspect, who is still at large, is a 22-year-old Palestinian resident of Shuafat. The Israeli forces reportedly claim the suspect is hiding in the area of the Shuafat refugee camp.

For five consecutive days, around 140,000 Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem’s Shuafat refugee camp, located two kilometers from the Old City, were under Israeli siege, with some unable to leave to receive critical health treatments and many basic supplies running low, as Israeli forces enforced a strict blockade.

Residents of the camp and surrounding areas called for Palestinians to mobilize and launched a general strike on Wednesday to pressure for ending the siege, which was slowly lifted on Thursday morning.

Shawan Jabarin, the chair of Al-Haq, a Palestinian human rights group, described the lockdown of the camp as “collective punishment” in which Israeli authorities “feel they are immune from accountability”.

“The life of a Palestinian has no sanctity to them, as well as their livelihoods and dignity. This is embedded in the [Israeli] occupation’s mindset,” said Jabarin. “From a legal point of view, this collective punishment amounts to a war crime and violates the Geneva convention. It’s a form of persecution that the state of Israel applies both in action and in law.”

Confrontations broke out with Israeli forces and settlers in dozens of neighborhoods, towns, and villages across occupied Jerusalem and the West Bank on Wednesday and Thursday.

18-year-old Palestinian Osama Adawi was shot dead by the Israeli forces during the confrontations on Wednesday in the Arroub refugee camp, north of Hebron city in the occupied West Bank.

On Thursday night, dozens of Israeli settlers stormed the flashpoint Palestinian neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah in occupied Jerusalem, shouting “death to Arabs” and attacking residents and their properties.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that its medical teams dealt with 20 injuries from physical assault and rock-throwing by settlers, including five that were transferred to the hospital for treatment.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, gangs of armed Israeli settlers also attacked residents, homes, and stores in the Palestinian town of Huwarra, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.

Local sources said the settlers armed with rifles, rocks, and pipes smashed stores, and cars, and physically assaulted residents under the protection of Israeli forces. The attack was documented in videos shared by journalists.
