Rights Group Warns Israeli Expansion Is Shrinking Gaza’s Territory

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Gaza Center for Human Rights has warned that Israeli forces are moving yellow concrete barriers westward inside the Gaza Strip, expanding military-controlled areas and further restricting space available for residents and displaced families.

In a statement Wednesday, the center said the so-called “Yellow Line,” established under the October 10, 2025, ceasefire arrangements, was becoming a shifting military boundary advancing toward populated areas, forcing repeated displacement and restricting access to homes, farmland and livelihoods.

The center documented several incidents during October, including the westward movement of barriers in Gaza City’s Shujaiya neighborhood and near al-Maghazi refugee camp, accompanied by gunfire, shelling and the destruction of property.

It also reported Israeli drone attacks on displacement shelters in eastern Khan Yunis on October 8 and Gaza City on October 25, which reportedly set tents ablaze and forced dozens of families to flee.

According to the center, Israeli forces now control or severely restrict access to more than 70% of Gaza’s approximately 365 square kilometers, while territory suitable for housing and displacement shelters may account for no more than 15% of the enclave.

The center warned that the remaining areas are increasingly overcrowded and lack adequate shelter, infrastructure and essential services, leaving families with few safe places to relocate.

Repeated displacement has also imposed mounting financial burdens on families already struggling with lost incomes and dependence on humanitarian assistance, while restrictions on construction materials and reconstruction continue to prevent residents from rebuilding their homes.

Citing Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, the center warned that the forcible transfer of civilians from occupied territory is prohibited except under narrowly defined circumstances, stressing that temporary military arrangements cannot justify permanent territorial or demographic changes.

It called on ceasefire guarantors, particularly the US, Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye, to intervene immediately to halt Israeli expansion, protect civilians and displacement shelters, facilitate reconstruction and guarantee Palestinians’ right to return safely to their homes.

The center warned that the continued westward movement of the Yellow Line, combined with widespread destruction and the lack of safe housing alternatives, risks turning repeated displacement into a permanent reality.
