UN Warns of Forced Displacement Amid Israel’s Expanding Control in West Bank

WEST BANK, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The United Nations has expressed deep concern over Israel’s expansion of enforcement powers in the occupied West Bank, warning that the measures could lead to the forced displacement of Palestinians.

Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the new Israeli policies appear aimed at creating a coercive environment that pushes Palestinians to leave their land without formal expulsion orders.

She warned that expanding Israeli authority in areas previously administered by the Palestinian Authority raises serious legal concerns and could amount to de facto annexation in violation of international law.

Earlier this month, Israel’s security cabinet approved decisions granting broader oversight and enforcement powers in Areas A and B of the West Bank, citing unlicensed construction, water issues, and protection of archaeological sites.

The UN warned such measures could facilitate large-scale demolitions and property seizures.

The UN office also reported that at least 1,052 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem, since October 2023, amid intensified Israeli military operations and settler violence.

Shamdasani urged the international community to act to prevent further violations and ensure Israel complies with its obligations as an occupying power under international law.
