West Bank woman loses baby after Israeli forces delay hospital transfer

NABLUS, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), A pregnant Palestinian woman from Qaryut, near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, miscarried on Monday morning after Israeli forces delayed her evacuation to the hospital through the Awarta checkpoint, south of the province.

Paramedic Bashar al‑Qaryuti, who accompanied the woman, said Israeli soldiers refused to allow the ambulance to pass through the checkpoint, detaining the medical crew.

Qaryuti added that the woman, who was in her sixth month of pregnancy and suffering heavy bleeding, was subjected to a search at the Israeli checkpoint.

He also said that the soldiers forced the ambulance driver to switch off the vehicle’s engine, disabling onboard medical equipment, adding that their detention lasted for more than half an hour before the ambulance was finally allowed to pass.

Although the woman eventually reached the hospital, she lost her baby. Doctors, however, managed to save her life, according to Qaryuti.

A week earlier, Sujoud Faqha, a 30-year-old mother of two from Sinjil near Ramallah, died of a heart attack when Israeli forces prevented an ambulance from reaching her by blocking the town’s entrance.
