RAMALLAH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Repression against Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip held in Israel’s Janot prison is escalating, amid repeated raids on their rooms, physical assaults and deprivation of basic rights. Collective punishment measures have become a fixed part of daily life inside the sections where they are detained.
According to the Asra Media Office (AMO), repression forces raided room 14 and two other rooms in section 4 of Janot prison on August 30, assaulting Gaza prisoners and injuring several of them with rubber bullets.
The Office said the attack was not an isolated incident. Prisoners from Gaza are repeatedly subjected to beatings, repression, insults and abuse, under strict security measures accompanied by collective punishments imposed merely because any sound is heard from their rooms.
According to testimonies, these punishments include depriving prisoners of showers, prayer and food, turning the details of daily life into tools of pressure and punishment.
The situation of Gaza detainees in Janot prison is particularly sensitive given the severe restrictions imposed on them. They face harsh detention conditions and broad isolation from the outside world, while raids, searches and assaults continue inside the prison sections.
Repressive practices are not limited to beatings and deprivation. They are also accompanied by direct threats, with the AMO quoting prisoners as saying they have been threatened by jailers with execution and hanging, and repeatedly told that they “will never see the light.”
The AMO said these testimonies reflect a pattern of abuse that goes beyond conventional punitive measures and amounts to constant psychological pressure, aimed at keeping prisoners under fear and collective punishment.
Developments in Janot have again drawn attention to the conditions of Gaza prisoners inside Israeli jails, particularly given the difficulty of obtaining independent information about their detention conditions and the growing concerns over their physical and psychological safety.
Between raids, bullets, deprivation and threats, Gaza prisoners find themselves facing a detention system built on collective punishment, repeated abuse, humiliation of human dignity and the denial of rights guaranteed under humanitarian law and international conventions.
