RAMALLAH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Asra Media Office (AMO) has warned of worsening conditions facing sick Palestinian women prisoners in Israel’s Damon Prison, saying several are suffering from serious illnesses that require urgent medical care while being denied treatment and follow-up.
The AMO said prisoner Fatima Saed Youssef, 34, is among the most serious cases in the prison. She suffers from hepatitis C, in addition to a severe infection at the site of a surgery she underwent before her arrest.
Youssef has also lost around 22 kilograms within a few months of her detention, raising growing fears that her health could deteriorate further due to continued medical neglect.
The AMO said Fatima’s suffering is not limited to her illness, noting that her six children are being deprived of their mother. Her family also lacks accurate information about the level of medical care she is receiving inside the prison because of restrictions on visits and communication.
The Office said Fatima is not the only case. Other sick women prisoners, including Fidaa Assaf, who has leukemia, Suhair Zaaqiq, who has cancer, and Abeer Odeh, who has lost part of her esophagus and intestines and has masses in her stomach, are facing extremely serious health conditions amid ongoing medical neglect and lack of necessary treatment.
The AMO called on rights and humanitarian organizations, especially the International Committee of the Red Cross, to urgently intervene and pressure Israeli occupation authorities to provide immediate treatment for sick women prisoners.
It also urged independent medical visits to assess their conditions, warning that the continuation of this policy could lead to catastrophic consequences that threaten their lives.
