Haaretz: Israel closes investigations into prisoner deaths without indictments

NAZARETH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Israeli occupation army opened 57 criminal investigations into the deaths of 56 Palestinian prisoners from Gaza and one Lebanese prisoner during the latest wars on Gaza and Lebanon, but none led to indictments, Haaretz reported on Friday.

The newspaper said seven investigations involved shooting incidents that killed prisoners, yet no charges were filed, despite growing criticism from international rights groups over the conditions in which Gaza detainees are held.

Most of the deaths occurred inside military detention facilities equipped with surveillance cameras and in the presence of soldiers and detainees who could serve as witnesses, the report said. However, the army claimed it was unable to identify suspects in most cases, citing difficulties in proving evidence under wartime conditions.

Haaretz added that some detainees died after being transferred to detention facilities while already wounded, while others died from illness or lack of adequate medical care.

Most investigations were opened in 2024, which saw record numbers of detainees from Gaza. Another 19 investigations were opened in 2023, including 13 in October, and three more in 2025.

The report said Israeli military prosecutors filed only two indictments out of 19 military police investigations into assault or unlawful use of force. One case involved a truck driver transporting detainees to Sde Teiman prison, who was sentenced to six months in jail.

The second involved soldiers from Unit 100 accused of violence against a Gaza detainee, but the case was closed after public pressure and after the Palestinian complainant was released and returned to Gaza before testifying in court.

Meanwhile, warnings continue over the deteriorating health conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, especially since the start of the war on Gaza, amid reports of torture, medical neglect and denial of treatment.

Official rights figures show that more than 9,400 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons at the beginning of July, including 3,244 administrative detainees. The figure does not include detainees held in Israeli military camps.
