RAMALLAH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Palestine Center for Prisoners’ Studies (PCPS) has affirmed that 25 Palestinian prisoners have been held continuously in Israeli jails for more than 25 years.
In a statement released on Monday, PCPS said that eight of these detainees were arrested before the signing of the Oslo Accords, a group recognized within the Palestinian Captive Movement as “long-serving prisoners.”
The shortest time served among them is 34 years, while some of them have spent more than four decades in captivity, PCPS added.
PCPS pointed to the immense humanitarian suffering endured by these prisoners, noting that most of them had lost dozens of close family members during their long years of detention, including parents, children, and wives, without being allowed by the Israeli prison service to bid them farewell or attend their funerals.
The PCPS also said that most of these prisoners suffer from serious chronic health issues exacerbated by systematic medical neglect, citing widespread reports talking about their exposure to torture, maltreatment, and harsh incarceration conditions.
