NABLUS, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Jewish settlers on Thursday demolished the Yanon Coeducational Elementary School in the South Nablus Directorate, nearly eight months after the forced displacement of residents from Khirbet Yanon, depriving 15 students of their only local school.
In a statement, the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education described the demolition as a new crime against Palestinian children and a clear violation of international humanitarian law and international conventions that guarantee the right to education and prohibit attacks on educational institutions.
The ministry said the school served 15 students from first through sixth grade and had played a vital role for years in ensuring children in the community could access education before it was destroyed.
It added that the demolition is part of a systematic policy aimed at undermining education in Palestinian communities, increasing pressure on residents, and ultimately depriving children of one of their most fundamental rights, the right to education.
The ministry called on the international community, the United Nations, and international human rights and humanitarian organizations to fulfill their legal and moral responsibilities by taking urgent action to protect educational institutions in Palestine, hold Israel accountable for its ongoing violations against students and schools, and end the targeting of the education sector.
