89 Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists recorded in June

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reported an escalation in Israeli military violations against Palestinian journalists during June, documenting 89 violations targeting journalists, media workers, and media students amid the continued targeting of press work.

A report issued Tuesday by the syndicate’s Freedoms Committee said the violations recorded in June 2026 included killings, arrests, injuries, detentions, obstruction of coverage, attacks on property, physical assaults, and theft.

The report documented a dangerous escalation in attacks on journalists’ safety, including the killing of Al Jazeera Mubasher cameraman Ahmad Washah after his home in Al-Bureij refugee camp was targeted. It also recorded direct injuries from live fire and tear gas canisters, as well as repeated suffocation cases during field coverage.

The data showed that the Israeli military was responsible for the overwhelming majority of violations, while the obstruction of press coverage was the most frequent violation, with 36 cases recorded through various means.

The report also documented cases in which journalists were detained during or after carrying out their work. These incidents included searches, the confiscation of vehicles or vehicle keys, and the prevention of journalists from completing coverage, indicating the use of detention as a tool to disrupt media work.

It also recorded three arrests involving two female journalists and one male journalist, in addition to a female media student. The arrests took place both during home raids and while journalists were covering events in the field, with detentions extended in some cases.

The report said the timeline of incidents showed a notable concentration of violations in the second half of June, especially between June 15 and June 29, when more than half of the documented cases occurred. It said this reflected an escalation accompanying Israeli attacks and settlement-related activity.

The syndicate said most violations took place while journalists were carrying out fieldwork, indicating the direct targeting of media coverage rather than journalists being caught incidentally in areas of confrontation.
